Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and began rolling it out in the Gemini app in October. It is Google’s new flagship model and a direct answer to Claude 5.5 and GPT-6. Here is what is new.
Task mode: Gemini works while you are away
The biggest change for users is task mode. A switch in the main chat window turns Gemini from a chat into an agent that works on delegated tasks with Google apps on its own, even when you are not at your computer. Gemini also gives more frequent progress updates during long tasks.
More than 40 connected apps
Gemini can now connect to over 40 external apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify. This means it can help with tasks like ordering groceries, booking a restaurant or managing an online store, not only answering questions about them.
Longer outputs and better coding
Gemini 4 Argon raises the output limit from 64,000 to 1,000,000 tokens, so it can produce very long documents or large amounts of code in a single run. Google also reports major coding improvements, and the Gemini app for macOS gains the agentic coding interface of Google Antigravity, Google’s agent-first development tool.
Who can use it
In the Gemini app, Argon is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Free users do not have access yet, and for developers the model started as a limited preview. Answers are also designed to be shorter and more direct, with fewer generic chatbot phrases.

- Gemini 3.1 Pro (February) for complex reasoning over large data, audio, video and code.
- Gemini 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8 Flash, a series of fast models updated through the summer.
- Nano Banana image models for generating and editing images inside Gemini and Google Workspace.
- Gemini Robotics ER 2, released in October in public preview, which plans multi-step tasks for robots.
