In 2026 all three major AI companies released agents that do not just chat but complete work for you on your computer and in your apps. They look similar, but each has its own strengths.
Claude Cowork
Claude Cowork appeared as a research preview in January 2026. You give Claude access to selected folders and apps, and it works with your files in a protected environment: it organises documents, builds spreadsheets and presentations, prepares reports and runs scheduled tasks. It supports skills and connectors to services such as Google Drive and Notion, and it can also use a browser.
ChatGPT Work
ChatGPT Work launched in July 2026 with GPT-5.6. It combines the ChatGPT agent with Codex, works with local files and a built-in browser, connects to other systems through plugins and can run tasks on a schedule. A beta feature called Sites creates interactive pages and dashboards from its results. On desktop, the Codex app is being merged into the ChatGPT app.
Gemini task mode
Gemini task mode arrived with Gemini 4 Argon in October 2026 for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. It is strongest inside the Google ecosystem, with Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar and Drive, plus more than 40 external apps such as Shopify and OpenTable.

- If you already use ChatGPT every day and need coding help as well, try ChatGPT Work.
- If your company runs on Google Workspace, Gemini task mode will feel the most natural.
