CapCut is a free-to-start video editor for phone, desktop and browser, and you can edit your first Reel in it in about 15 minutes. This CapCut tutorial for beginners follows one simple workflow: set up a vertical project, trim, cut the pauses, add B-roll, captions and music, then export.
You will also get pro tips, a note on music licensing for business accounts and the mistakes beginners make most often. Names of buttons change between app versions, so the steps describe the action rather than the exact label.
What you need before you start
- The latest CapCut app from the official app store, or the desktop version.
- Two to five clips filmed vertically: a talking clip (A-roll) and a few cutaway shots (B-roll).
- A short script or at least a clear point for the Reel.
- Headphones, so you can judge the sound honestly.
Free or paid: know the limits first
CapCut has a free version and paid plans, and the split between them has changed more than once. Some AI tools, for example auto captions or background removal, may have usage limits or need a paid plan depending on your region and version. Some templates and effects are marked as Pro and can add a watermark if you keep them.
Before you start, check the current plan details inside the app, and avoid Pro-marked assets if you want a clean export. A manual edit with your own footage works fine on a free plan.
The 15-minute CapCut workflow
- Create a new project and import your clips. Select them in the order you filmed them.
- Set the canvas to vertical 9:16 before you edit, so text and cuts do not shift later.
- Trim the start and end of each clip by dragging the handles on the timeline.
- Play the A-roll and use the split action to cut mistakes, long pauses and filler words.
- Place B-roll over the talking clip wherever the visuals are weak or you cut a section, keeping the original voice playing.
- Add captions: try the automatic option if your plan includes it, or type text manually, then correct every line.
- Add music at low volume so your voice stays clear, and pick a licensed track (see the licensing note below).
- Use only simple transitions or none at all. Hard cuts feel clean and professional.
- Watch the whole video once with sound and once without sound, and fix anything unclear.
- Export in 1080×1920 at the frame rate you filmed, then upload it to Instagram.
Cut dead air and tighten the pace
Most beginner videos feel slow because of tiny gaps before and after each sentence. Remove them by splitting the clip at the end of each phrase and deleting the silence. Aim for a new shot, a zoom or a text change every two to four seconds so the eye always has something to follow.
CapCut may also offer automatic tools for removing silences or building a first edit. These can save time, but always review the result, because they sometimes cut breaths and pauses that make you sound natural.
Captions people actually read
Keep captions to a few words per line, in a large, high-contrast font, placed in the middle or upper-middle of the screen. Instagram’s interface covers the bottom area and the right edge, so keep text out of those zones.
Automatic captions can misread Armenian names, brand names and numbers. Read every line out loud and fix it by hand. Highlight one keyword per sentence in a brand colour if you want extra emphasis.
Music and licensing for business accounts
Music that is fine for a personal account is not always allowed on a business account. Instagram’s own library for business profiles is usually narrower, and a popular song from a template may not carry commercial rights. When in doubt, use music from a source whose licence clearly covers business use, or from the platform’s library for business accounts.
Read the licence, keep a note of where each track came from, and keep the music lower than the voice. This is general guidance, not legal advice, so check the current terms of the platform and the music source.
Export settings for Instagram
Export in vertical 1080×1920 (9:16). Match the frame rate to your source footage, which is usually 30 fps, instead of forcing a higher value. A higher resolution on a 1080p source does not add detail, and Instagram compresses the file anyway.
Before posting, save the video to your phone, watch it once more in the Instagram preview and check the cover image for the profile grid.
Pro tips
- Cut on movement: change shots while a hand moves or a head turns, so the cut is almost invisible.
- Use the same two fonts and two colours in every Reel to build a recognisable look.
- Save a favourite caption style or project as a starting point for the next Reel.
- Start the video on the result or the most interesting moment, then explain.
- Lower the music wherever you speak, and raise it slightly between phrases.
Mistakes beginners make
- Editing first and setting the aspect ratio later, which breaks the layout.
- Using a different transition between every clip.
- Leaving the music louder than the voice.
- Trusting automatic captions without reading them.
- Placing text under the caption area or on the right-hand buttons.
- Making the video longer than the idea needs.
