Why Marketing Is an Art (and a Science)

Why Marketing Is an Art (and a Science)

Marketing is both the art and the science of selling products and services. Even if you create the best product in the world, it will be hard to sell it without marketing.

Think of brands like Nike, Starbucks, Apple or Levi’s. The first thing that comes to mind is probably their logo. Of course they sell good shoes, coffee, phones and jeans, but it is hard to imagine them being as big as they are today without marketing.

Marketing is everywhere

Marketing surrounds us. Today you have probably seen several ads online, passed a billboard or two, and the device you are reading this on most likely carries a brand logo. All of this is marketing.

Advertising takes the largest share of marketing budgets. Companies around the world spend hundreds of billions of dollars on it every year, and that spending has kept growing over the last decade.

The science: data, tests and targeting

Modern marketing runs on data. Businesses study who their customers are, where they spend time online and what makes them buy. Ads can be shown to a very specific audience, and every campaign can be measured: how many people saw it, clicked, wrote a message or made a purchase.

This is the scientific side of marketing. You make a hypothesis, test it with a small budget, look at the numbers and keep only what works.

The art: stories, design and emotions

Numbers alone do not make people fall in love with a brand. Customers remember stories, faces, colours and feelings. A strong visual style, a clear voice and content that speaks to real needs turn a product into something people want to talk about and share.

This is the art of marketing: finding the idea that makes your brand different and expressing it in a way your audience will notice and remember.

How to combine both in your business

  • Know your audience. Describe your ideal customer and the problems your product solves for them.
  • Build a recognisable brand. Use consistent colours, fonts and tone on your website and social media.
  • Tell stories. Show real customers, the people behind the business and how your product is made.
  • Measure everything. Track reach, messages and sales, and let the results guide your next steps.
  • Keep testing. Try new formats, offers and audiences, and scale what brings results.

Good marketing needs both sides: creativity that attracts attention and analysis that turns attention into sales. If you want help with your social media or advertising, or want to learn it yourself in our SMM course, the Setup Marketing team is happy to help.
