OpenAI released a major update today called GPT-5.1. This comes after the initial release of GPT-5 in August. The company describes this upgrade as a way to make the AI smarter and more enjoyable for daily use.
Two New Model Variations
The update introduces two specific versions of the technology. The first is GPT-5.1 Instant. This model is designed to be warmer, more intelligent, and better at following specific instructions.
The second version is GPT-5.1 Thinking. This model focuses on clarity. It is faster when handling simple tasks but remains persistent when solving complex problems.
You do not need to choose between them manually. In most cases, the system will automatically match your query to the model best suited to answer it. If you still prefer the older GPT-5 models, they will remain in the legacy menu for three months before being removed.

More Personality Options
OpenAI is moving away from a single conversational style. The company stated that with over 800 million users, a “one-size-fits-all” approach no longer works.
You can now choose from a list of personality presets to change how the AI sounds. The new options include:
- Default
- Professional
- Friendly
- Candid
- Quirky
- Efficient
- Nerdy
- Cynical
Some users will also see a new experiment in their settings this week that allows for even more specific fine-tuning of the AI’s style.
ChatGPT Is Now a Messenger
In a significant shift, ChatGPT now supports group chats. This feature effectively turns the platform into a messenger app.
You can create groups with up to 20 participants. The AI is an active participant in these chats. It tracks the general context of the conversation and responds to mentions. It can even use emojis and send memes in its replies. This function is available to users on the free plan and is designed to simplify team discussions.

Context Behind the Update
This launch is important for OpenAI following the release of GPT-5 in August. That previous version failed to meet user expectations and led to frustration over minor improvements. The backlash was strong enough that OpenAI brought back GPT-4o as an option shortly after the launch.
The mixed reaction even caused Microsoft to explore models from rival company Anthropic for its Copilot tools. This new 5.1 update, along with the recent launch of the ChatGPT Atlas web browser, appears to be OpenAI’s effort to regain momentum and improve user experience
